An eye exam consists of more than just checking to see if you need glasses. During a complete eye exam, we not only determines your prescription for glasses or contact lenses, but also assess your eyes’ ability to work together as a team (binocular vision), check for common eye diseases, and evaluate your overall health. Adults should have regular eye exams to keep prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye diseases, which when caught early, may prevent vision loss. Below is a list of a few eye diseases and conditions that we looks for during a complete eye exam:   <ul> <li>Refractive error - This is your prescription. There are 3 types of refractive error, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia(farsightedness), and astigmatism. Refractive errors are corrected with glasses or contact lenses</li> <li>Amblyopia - Amblyopia is caused by your brain’s reaction to a turned eye or the eye that has a much greater prescription than the other. The brain ignores images from the turned or blurry eye. If untreated, amblyopia can slow visual development of the affected eye, which can lead to permanent vision loss.</li> <li>Strabismus - Strabismus is an eye than turns inwards or outwards relative to the other eye. If left untreated, a strabismus can lead to amblyopia, and decrease depth perception.</li> <li>Glaucoma - Glaucoma is the degeneration of the optic nerve(a cord that connects the eye to the brain)that is sometimes associated with high eye pressures. During a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist measures your eye pressures and looks at the optic nerve to determine whether or not you have glaucoma. In its early stages, there are no symptoms. Therefore it is important to have regular eye exams to prevent permanent vision loss.</li> <li>Macular degeneration - Macular degeneration is a disease that affects your central vision that is needed to read and drive. In advanced cases, it can lead to serious vision loss.</li> <li>Other diseases - Your optometrist can detect early signs of some systemic diseases by looking at your eyes. Having regular eye exams can prevent vision loss associated with some diseases with treatment.</li> </ul>   During your complete eye exam, you may be dilated to allow your optometrists to properly assess the health of your eyes. If you feel unsafe driving after being dilated, please arrange for someone to drive you home from our office.

<h4>Most parents or caretakers wonder whether your child needs an eye exam. Vision screenings performed by school nurses are not as complete as a comprehensive eye exam performed by an optometrist.  Eye exams are extremely important for children, because vision problems are fairly common among preschoolers and school aged children.  By identifying your child’s vision problems early, your child will have greater success with treatment.  If left untreated, some eye conditions and diseases may stunt visual development and cause visual impairment.  According to the American Optometric Association, infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam by the age of six months.  After that, children should receive additional eye exams at the age of three, and then at the age of 5 or 6.  The American Optometric Association also recommends an eye exam every two years for school aged children who do not require vision correction.  Children that do need glasses or contact lenses should have eye exams according to your optometrist’s recommendations. </h4> <h4>When scheduling an eye exam for your child, choose a time when he or she is usually alert and in a good mood.  Be sure to tell us if your child has a history of delayed motor development, engages in frequent eye rubbing, fails to maintain eye contact, cannot keep visual fixation on an object, has poor eye tracking, or has failed a vision screening.  We will also want to know about previous ocular diagnoses. Make sure to inform us of any family history of eye problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, strabismus, amblyopia, or eye diseases.</h4>  Don't hesitate to call us and schedule a children's eye exam, to make sure your child has the best vision possible!

Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common problems treated by optometrists. Tears are comprised of three layers. The mucus layer coats the cornea(the clear portion of your eye), forming a proper foundation for the tear film to stick to they eye. The middle layer is the aqueous layer, which provides moisture and supplies oxygen and other nutrients to the eye. The outer lipid layer is an oily film that prevents the tears from evaporating from the eye. There are many causes of dry eyes. During a dry eye evaluation, your optometrist will determine which tear layer is deficient, and therefore causing your dry eye symptoms. Treatment for dry eyes depends on the underlying cause, and can vary from artificial tears, punctual plugs, lifestyle changes, tear duct dilation and irrigation, dietary changes, warm compresses, etc. If you've been suffering from dry eyes, schedule an exam, and let us provide the best treatment possible for you!

<div> If you wear or are interested in wearing contact lenses, make sure to mention it when scheduling your eye exam. A contact lens exam is not much different from a routine eye exam.   Some additional tests will be performed to examine the fit of your contact lenses. Our optometrist determines your prescription for glasses and contact lenses, asses your eyes' ability to work together as a team (binocular vision), checks for common eye diseases, and evaluates your overall health. Your optometrist will also need additional information before you can be fitted for contact lenses.  You may be asked questions about lifestyle and preferences in contact lens regimens.  Other measurements such as the curvature of your cornea, an evaluation of your tear film, and your pupil size will be taken to ensure a proper contact lens fitting.     After finding a contact lens that is comfortable for you, fits properly, and provides good vision, your optometrist will write a prescription for your contact lenses which contains the parameters of your new contact lenses.  Annual eye exams are recommended so your optometrist can monitor the health of your eyes, and check on the progress with the contact lenses.   </div>

Laser eye surgeries correct for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During your refractive surgery evaluation, we will ask you a few questions and perform various tests to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.  If you are determined to be a good candidate, we will work with an eye surgeon to determine the best type of refractive surgery for you.    After the surgery is complete, we will evaluate the progress of the surgery, and make sure no complications have occurred.
